PLASTIC: EMBLEM OF ANTI-DEVELOPMENT |
Author: Dr. Oscar Bravo
"It was a plastic city, one of those I don't want to see" (Blades) When we refer to the history of human civilizations, we find the presence of terrible paradoxes about the actions and attitudes of the institutional powers that have had a determining influence on what men and women have been, are and possibly will be. In which we are all linked in a close relationship that identifies us as members of a planetary society, which we can give certain specificities in the last hundred years with the handling of some ideological flags on the senses and meanings of progress and development, which has acted irresponsibly in the terrible damage caused to the habitat or quality of life, in which today there is a key and silent character, who has been sold as a human invention for the comfort and practicality of things. We are talking about the use of plastic, which has such a negative impact on the environment, and which has become known worldwide as "garbage that does not degrade" and which the large industries and plastic manufacturers care more about the huge profits than the future of humanity. There are some very illustrative phrases, taken from a blog of the Camilo José Cela University, such as: "Thousands of tons of plastic of various sizes contaminate our oceans, and have a devastating effect on marine fauna and birds. Humans, being at the top of the trophic pyramid, are not exempt from the dangers that this serious contamination entails." .and other phrases from international organizations: "The World Health Organization and UNEP have jointly declared that endocrine disruption (one of the effects of plastic) is a global crisis. An international group of scientists has requested that governments declare plastic as hazardous waste." Therefore, "development and progress"should reflect on the terrible consequences suffered by the environment and humanity when living with plastic.
